• Series: On the Road with Jesus
Part 40 of the Sermon Series: On the Road with Jesus | A Study in the Gospel of Mark Why did Jesus drive out the money changers, etc. from the temple court? Some of the business being run in the temple was necessary, not all was bad. But the leaders had become busy with the ‘business’ of running the temple and preoccupied with large profits and consumerism. They had forgotten the steadfast love of the Lord and the Lord’s desire for the nations. (Isaiah 56:3-8) What were the religious leaders trusting in? What kinds of things do we trust in? The leaders were going through the motions of temple worship but had forgotten its meaning and purpose. Talk about times you have gone through the motions of doing something right and good but forgetting the love of the Lord, maybe even seeking your own gain or benefit. There was a lot of going through the motions on the part of the religious leaders and the flurry of activity in the temple courtyard, but there was no love for the people, no worship of God, no fruit. When the disciples pass back by the fig tree and Peter comments on it being dead, Jesus responded, “Have faith in God…” What is the connection between fruit and faith?
